A beautifully crafted romantic comedy with stunning performances from Academy award winning actresses Olympia Dukakis and Brenda Fricker, Cloudburst sees Stella (Dukakis) and Dot (Fricker) escape from a nursing home in Maine, USA before driving to Canada to be legally married. While on the road, they pick up a gorgeous, young hitchhiking hunk who ultimately gets more than he bargained for. The road is long and rough, and stubborn Stella begins to wonder if she can really take care of Dot in their old age. After 31 years, can they keep their family together?

To go into the draw to win a 2-for-1 pass (ten passes available), send an email to admin@midsumma.org.au with “Cloudburst” as the subject, giving your name and suburb. The passes are for the first week of release (i.e. from 11 July) and are subject to all usual terms and conditions.

Cube 37 (Frankston Arts Centre)

Davey St, Frankston VIC 3199

Visible Dusk to Dawn from street level.

May 24 – June 16

Alison Bennett is a Melbourne based artist with solo exhibitions across Australia and works in major Australian collections, not to mention a Midsumma favorite!

For her new commission with WHITE STREET PROJECT she will present Shifting Skin: Transforming Fabric, a large scale multi-channel video-projection, at Cube 37 (visible from night fall to sunrise).

Shifting Skin: Transforming Fabric presents detailed scans of human skin that has been marked by tattoo ink. In a slight of hand, the tattooed skin has been animated and transformed into something like an alien creature morphing across the different projections, visible from the street.

This silent moving image work is part of a larger ongoing project that examines skin as a photographic surface and a transitioning fabric. Bennett deploys a unique combination of techniques that include scanography, 3D depth maps and animation, to create an experience that is somewhat disorientating and revelatory.

“Tick the box. M or F. Male or Female are the only options ‘ordinary’ people know about. M for Male. F for Female. You’re one or the other. But what if you’re not? Like me.
