Important equal-rights petitions

Thirty-nine Commonwealth nations make it a crime to be gay or transgender.  Maximise the effect of your petition now by standing with Commonwealth Secretary General Sharma and demanding an end to these laws: sign a petition (urgently) to the leaders of the Commonwealth nations who are gathered in Perth this week.

You can go to jail for up to ten years for being gay in Nigeria. Now the Nigerian Senate is considering an anti-gay marriage bill that would make it a punishable offense even to help a gay couple get married. We encourage you to sign the petition of Behind the Mask, a Nigerian GLBT activist organization, in their struggle for equal rights.

Secretary General of the Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharma

Star Observer has today revealed that PM Gillard intends to allow a conscience vote on marriage equality.

Equal Love convenor Ali Hogg:

“Equal Love rejects a conscience vote. We demand policy change. We demand the ALP commit to full equal rights for same sex couples, not half measures.

This proposal is simply a way for Gillard to avoid being attacked at the national conference over her discriminatory stance, while still keeping the anti-equality bigots inside the party on side. In reality, a conscience vote will not be sufficient to repeal the homophobic marriage ban. Binding policy change is needed for that.

Policy in support of equal rights is the right thing to do, it is what the community expects, and it’s what most of ALP members and voters want to see.

Equal Love urges all those inside the party to keep fighting for policy change, and encourages all supporters of equality to join the rally outside the ALP’s national conference this December. We need to send Gillard a clear message that we will not rest until discrimination is removed from the Marriage Act.”

ALP conference protest details: 12 noon, Saturday 4 December, Hyde Park, Sydney. Marching to the conference at Darling Harbour.

This Festival is going to be one for the history books. Read on for all you need to know about what’s happening across Melbourne, having your say, special and FREE events happening this week in the Fringe Club and, of course, when to don your leopard print pants and make like a rock star.
